The Indian smartphone market has experienced an unpredictable year in 2018. Phones like the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro, and the Realme 1 redefined value in the budget and lower mid-range price segments. In August, the Xiaomi POCO F1 shook up the affordable flagship segment by providing flagship specifications at a ₹20,999 price tag.
While these changes were taking place, the prices of traditional flagships continued to rise in India–with few exceptions. The depreciating value of the Indian rupee also introduced volatility in the pricing equation.
Realme—which has quickly become one of Xiaomi’s most competitive rivals in the online budget segment—has also increased the prices of the Realme 2 and the Realme C1.
Now, to celebrate its number one position in the Indian smartphone market for five successive quarters (according to IDC), Xiaomi has dropped the prices of the Redmi Note 5 Pro, Xiaomi Mi A2, and the Xiaomi Redmi Y2 in India.
The price drop is valid across all variants of the phones. It should be noted that the phones were available at even lower discounted prices during the recent festive sales, but now the festive shopping season
Xiaomi originally launched the Redmi Note 5 Pro in India at ₹13,999 for the 4GB RAM/64GB storage variant. A few months later, the company increased the pricing of that particular variant by ₹1,000, selling it for ₹14,999.
The reason for this was said to be supply issues. The phone itself continued to sell in large numbers as it became a bestseller. Now, nine months after its Indian launch, the 4GB RAM variant returns to its original price of ₹13,999.
The 6GB RAM/64GB storage variant is now available for ₹15,999—down from its original launch price of ₹16,999. Note that the Redmi Note 5 Pro’s price drop comes six days before the Indian launch of its successor, the Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro.
The Xiaomi Mi A2’s 4GB RAM/64GB storage variant was launched for ₹16,999. Now, its price has been dropped by ₹1,000 to ₹15,999. The 6GB RAM/128GB storage variant is now available for ₹18,999—down from ₹19,999.
Finally, the Redmi Y2’s 4GB RAM/64GB storage variant will now be available for ₹11,999—down from ₹12,999.
The price drops for the aforementioned phones will be applicable at all retailers.
